Representatives of Japanese media corporation NHK saw how the Suspilne Novyny team works during a visit to Suspilne’s central office in Kyiv on January 8. The NHK delegation, consisting of Senior Director NHK, responsible for media operations Hara Seiki, Director of the International News Department at NHK Headquarters Sato Fumitaka, and Head of the NHK Berlin Bureau Hori Masami, visited the Suspilne Novyny newsroom and the new full-cycle digital production complex.

The Japanese colleagues were presented with the work of the newsrooms, told about the hyperlocal network and correspondents abroad, as well as about the digital platforms and modern technological solutions that Suspilne uses in its daily content production in wartime conditions.

“We would like to learn from Suspilne in order to integrate broadcasting and communications and make NHK’s presence known,” and also exchanged opinions on digital development and the use of generative AI”, stated NHK Senior Director Hara Seiki.

Meeting with representatives of NHK

“For us, this visit was an important sign of professional solidarity. Our Japanese colleagues came to learn and understand how Suspilne managed to develop so quickly while maintaining audience trust and institutional stability in the extremely unfavorable conditions of war. This interest in our experience confirms that even in a crisis, public media can be a space for development, innovation, and responsible leadership”, said a member of the board of Suspilne responsible for news and regional broadcasting Mariya Frey.

“We were pleased to show our colleagues from NHK how we are putting the experience gained during our study trips to Japan into practice. This is a truly mutually beneficial collaboration — we adopt Japanese systematicity and technological expertise, and in return we share our own achievements in the development of digital platforms, production processes, and the application of innovative technologies. Such partnerships inspire and help Suspilne become stronger,” said head of the foreign cooperation department at Suspilne Valeriia Bezpala.

As a reminder, as part of their cooperation with NHK, representatives of Suspilne previously made a series of study trips to Japan. During their internships, they learned about the activities of the Japanese public broadcaster, in particular its approaches to archiving and actions during emergencies, and shared their own experience of working in wartime conditions.
