How has the role of the public service broadcaster changed during the war? How can media operate under constant shelling, and how can freedom of speech survive in wartime? Mykola Chernotytskyi, Head of the Managing Board of Suspilne Ukraine, discussed these questions in an interview with Latvia’s public service broadcaster LSM.

“The war has highlighted the importance of independent media, especially public service broadcasters. Many people underestimated their influence and role, including in Ukraine. What matters is that every country’s public service broadcaster is, first of all, part of its security framework and national information security. Secondly, it is part of its democratic institutions. Just as democracy is unimaginable without a parliament, it is unimaginable without public service broadcasting. This is important to understand,” said Mykola Chernotytskyi.

According to the Head of the Managing Board of Suspilne Ukraine, the public service broadcaster’s role in the national security system is particularly important during wartime.

“News means safety. You can make decisions when you are well informed. Can others provide this? To some extent, yes. But in any country’s media landscape, the public service broadcaster sets an example of adherence to journalistic standards,” Mykola Chernotytskyi emphasised.
