January 19 marks 9 years of Suspilne Ukraine. Over this time, it has become an independent media organisation trusted by millions of Ukrainians. We share nine facts to help you get to know us better.

Fact 1. Suspilne is the youngest public broadcaster in Europe

Suspilne Ukraine was established in 2017 as part of Ukraine’s public broadcasting reform following the Revolution of Dignity. By comparison, most European public broadcasters have been operating for decades: the BBC in the United Kingdom since the 1920s, ARD in Germany since 1950, and France Télévisions in France since the early 1990s.
At the same time, Suspilne Ukraine is a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the world’s largest professional association of broadcasters, which organises international projects such as Eurovision and the Eurovision News Exchange.

Fact 2. The semicircle in the logo is Suspilne’s prism

Suspilne’s signature semicircle is a prism through which we look at reality. It symbolises focus, attention to context, and responsibility for how information is presented. Visually, it is a three-dimensional transparent form that concentrates and disperses light — an analogy for how Suspilne distributes verified news and diverse content across television, radio, and digital platforms.
The principles of transparency and openness are embedded in the brand identity itself. The colours that emerge through light refraction emphasise Suspilne’s multiplatform nature, while each brand within the company has its own color identification.

Fact 3. Suspilne Ukraine is a large nationwide media organisation, not “just one channel”

Suspilne Ukraine includes television, radio, and digital platforms in Kyiv and across Ukraine’s regions. It comprises national TV channels — Pershyi, Suspilne Kultura, Suspilne Sport; radio stations — Ukrainske Radio and its national network, Radio Kultura, Radio Promin, and Radiotochka; the website suspilne.media (Suspilne Novyny, Suspilne Kultura, Suspilne Sport); dozens of national and local digital platforms, including YouTube channels and social media pages; the archival video and audio platform Suspilne Mediateka; children’s content “Brobaks”; and teen content “Kolaider.” Suspilne also includes the Public Media Academy and five musical ensembles of Ukrainian Radio.

Fact 4. Suspilne Ukraine is one of the largest employers in the media sector

Suspilne Ukraine brings together thousands of professionals across the country: journalists, editors, producers, engineers, researchers, administrative and creative teams. This large and diverse team includes more than 4,000 employees. The company’s headquarters is in Kyiv, with regional branches in oblast centres and hyperlocal correspondents working in communities. Suspilne produces a wide range of content — from digital texts, television broadcasts, and podcasts to documentary films and even audience research. 165 members of the Suspilne team are currently serving in Ukraine’s Defence Forces.

Fact 5. Suspilne Ukraine has its own “Oscar” — the Suspilne Code Award

The Suspilne Code is an annual award that has become a space for mutual appreciation and recognition within the team. Colleagues nominate one another and projects that support, inspire, lead, and have the greatest impact over the year. The award highlights the contributions of people working in different conditions and roles who share Suspilne’s core values: independence, reliability, quality, openness, and diversity. This internal recognition format is unique among Ukrainian media. Each year, teams nominate people and projects through an open survey, followed by voting in each category. Winners are announced on Suspilne’s birthday.

Fact 6. Upholding standards is our everyday work

Suspilne regularly monitors its broadcasts and content for compliance with journalistic standards, as well as balance of opinions and internal rules. In 2025, external experts conducting a gender audit noted Suspilne’s potential to serve as a role model for other media in implementing human rights standards and inclusive practices. In this work, the team is guided by the Concept of an Inclusive Approach in Content Production and Team Operations, and monitors gender balance in programmes through the BBC’s 50:50 project. National diversity is regulated by the Concept of Broadcasting on National Minorities, while internal interaction is guided by Suspilne’s Code of Conduct and Ethics. Suspilne has also developed Principles for the Use of Artificial Intelligence to ensure that new technologies do not contradict journalistic standards.

Fact 7. Suspilne preserves audiovisual heritage and builds the largest media archive

Suspilne Ukraine preserves and digitises audio and video archives dating back to the 1920s — some materials are nearly 100 years old. Its collections include historical radio recordings, television programmes, concerts, interviews, and chronicles of key events in Ukrainian history. At the same time, media professionals continue documenting contemporary history. Suspilne’s archivists add unique recordings daily — to preserve historical memory and evidence, to help hold perpetrators of war crimes accountable, and to ensure future generations understand these dark times and prevent their repetition.
Suspilne Ukraine also ensures broad public access to archival materials by publishing them on the Suspilne Mediateka website, creating a powerful source base for in-depth research of the past and present, and promoting the media archive as a layer of Ukraine’s audiovisual heritage.

These ensembles take part in concert and cultural projects and tour in Ukraine and internationally. In 2024–2025, the Honoured Academic Symphony Orchestra of Ukrainian Radio joined a concert tour marking the 100th anniversary of Ukrainske Radio, presenting Ukrainian music to international audiences during wartime.
