How the Ukrainian public broadcaster became one of the first in Europe to publish an AI strategy, and why it refuses to let AI publish anything, explains Dmytro Khilchenko, member of the managing board of Suspilne Ukraine, responsible for production and technology, in an interview with DW Akademie.
DW Akademie: Most European public broadcasters still have no AI strategy. Why did you write one?
Dmytro Khilchenko: Because AI is already in our editorial teams, whether we like it or not. People use it for transcription, translation, brainstorming, production — some use it openly, some secretly, some better than others. We are the largest public broadcaster in Ukraine, and yet we had regulated none of this and we had set no priorities.
So we went looking for a template first. We asked the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and colleagues across Europe to send us their AI strategies. Most replied that they did not have one, or that they were still working on it. Some had been running AI projects for six or seven years without ever producing a single strategic document. So, I wouldn’t say we were first, we were among the first to put it on paper.
