Suspilne Ukraine, Ukraine’s public service broadcaster, is among the first European public service broadcasters to develop a dedicated artificial intelligence strategy. Dmytro Khilchenko, a member of Suspilne Ukraine’s Management Board responsible for production and technology, outlined the document’s main priorities and objectives at an online meeting of the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) AI Accelerator on 9 October, attended by representatives of member organisations.

“We developed Suspilne Ukraine’s AI strategy during wartime and with limited resources, so we made it simple, practical and open to change. Our goal is to become a global example of how artificial intelligence strengthens, rather than undermines, public-interest journalism. Ukraine does more than learn from international experience: Suspilne Ukraine is building its own expertise and is ready to share it. That is why we are presenting our strategy to EBU colleagues and leading the working group on agentic coding,” said Dmytro Khilchenko, a member of Management Board responsible for production and technology of Suspilne Ukraine.

Suspilne’s AI strategy covers three main areas:

  • Internal tools to help teams work more efficiently. These include using AI for news and production planning, information verification, transcription, voiceovers and working with archives. This area is the highest priority for the first six months. The newsroom will be the first to test the new solutions.
  • Audience products. The strategy envisages content recommendation systems, personalised news feeds, data visualisation tools and a conversational AI agent called “Ask Suspilne”.
  • Partnerships to protect media interests. Suspilne will work with Ukrainian media, the European Broadcasting Union, public institutions and technology platforms to protect copyright, counter disinformation and develop responsible approaches to the use of AI.

The strategy is available in Ukrainian at this link.

AI Accelerator is the European Broadcasting Union’s focus group on the adoption of artificial intelligence in public service media.
